Can Pepto Bismol cause black stools?

Yes. Taking Pepto Bismol or Kaopectate can turn your stool black.  Sometimes it can even turn your stools a green color!  Do not be alarmed by this, however.  The main reason you may get black stools after taking Pepto is caused from its active ingredient, bismuth subsalicylate.  Black stools can last for several days and the only reason to be concerned is if they do not go away even after you stop taking Pepto Bismol.
